Initializing neural core

Two ways to reach iPhone and Android users, and the questions that decide which one suits your project.

When you decide to build a mobile app, one of the first technical choices is how to build it. You can write separate native apps for iOS and Android, or use a cross-platform approach where one codebase runs on both. Neither is universally better; they suit different projects.

What native means

A native app is written specifically for one platform, using that platform's own tools and languages. iOS apps and Android apps are built separately, each following the conventions users of that platform expect.

Native development gives the most direct access to device features and the finest control over performance and behaviour. The trade-off is that you are building and maintaining two apps.

What cross-platform means

Cross-platform frameworks let a team write most of the app once and run it on both iOS and Android. Shared code can mean less duplicated effort and a more consistent product across both platforms.

The trade-off is that very platform-specific features or demanding graphics may need extra work, and you depend on the framework keeping pace with the operating systems.

Questions that help you decide

  • Do you need to launch on both platforms at the same time?
  • Does the app rely on advanced device hardware or platform-specific features?
  • How important is squeezing out maximum performance, for example in games or heavy graphics?
  • How large is the budget, and who will maintain the app over time?
  • Is a consistent experience across platforms a priority?

Do not skip the design

Whichever path you choose, the success of a mobile app depends heavily on the interface and experience. Clear flows and thoughtful screens matter more to most users than the technology underneath, which is why UI/UX design belongs at the start of the project.
